Yin Earth (己)

You are not the soil a tree bursts out of, but a field someone has cultivated. Soft garden earth, moist and loose, where a hand reaches in and a seed stays. 己 is Yin Earth: not a mountain but a garden bed. Not the place where people stand, but the place things grow from.

This is your main strength — you nourish. You don't need to be at the center to be useful; you work through what rises around you. You notice what a person or a project lacks and quietly supply it — a resource, a helping hand, a discreet fix to someone else's work. Almost nothing goes to waste with you: scraps, mistakes, other people's experience all get used, becoming compost for what comes next. You are flexible and adapt to what's been planted rather than bending it to yourself. And often the people around you grow precisely in your soil — they just don't always notice.

But the field has its own shadow: it gives itself to whatever grows on it. You know how to dissolve into other people's needs so completely that you stop feeling your own — feeding someone else's tree until you're depleted. Hence the background anxiety: soil is afraid of turning out barren, not useful enough, and you run the loop of self-reproach — "did too little, did it wrong, should have done better." That isn't humility; it's fear wearing modesty's mask.

Maturity for 己 is not to stop nourishing, but to decide what exactly you are growing. A field is not obliged to accept every seed. Leave part of yourself fallow — not out of laziness, but so there's something left to feed with later. You are most fertile when you choose the planting yourself, rather than agreeing to whatever's been stuck into you.
