What a birth chart actually is

A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky from one spot on Earth at one minute. Not a forecast, not a personality test — a diagram of where every body was, seen from where you were. Everything astrology says afterwards is interpretation layered on top of that geometry, and the geometry itself is not in dispute: it comes from an ephemeris, and an ephemeris is astronomy.

This calculator runs the Swiss Ephemeris, the same tables professional software uses, resolves your city to real coordinates and applies the historical time offset for that exact date — including the daylight-saving rules that actually applied in your country that year. That last part is where most free calculators quietly drift: they apply today's rules to a birth in 1987.

Reading the result

Sun, Moon and Rising — the "Big Three". They are three different questions, which is why one sign never describes anyone. The Sun is the thing you are becoming and the thing you keep spending energy on. The Moon is your resting state, how you self-soothe and what you need in order to feel safe. The Rising — the Ascendant — is the sign coming over the horizon at your minute of birth; it is the doorway other people walk through before they reach either of the first two.

The Ascendant is why time matters. It moves a full degree every four minutes and changes sign roughly every two hours. A birth time off by three hours usually means the wrong Ascendant and the wrong house layout — most of the chart's personal detail, gone.

Personal, social and outer planets. Mercury, Venus and Mars move fast and are genuinely yours: thinking, wanting, acting. Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough that they colour a couple of years at a time — meaning and limit. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in a sign for the better part of a decade, so their sign describes your generation, not you. Anyone selling you a personality read on your Neptune sign is selling you your entire school year.

A retrograde marker means the planet appeared to move backwards from Earth at your birth. It is an apparent motion, not a malfunction. Read it as an inward turn of that planet's function, not as damage.

Why we put two other systems beside it

A natal chart is one language for describing a birth moment. Human Design reads that same moment twice — once at birth and once eighty-eight days earlier — and turns it into a body-level mechanic: type, strategy, authority. BaZi ignores the planets entirely and reads the moment through a solar calendar of stems and branches.

Three unrelated systems, one birth minute. Where they converge, the signal is probably real. Where they contradict each other, the contradiction is the interesting part — and it is usually the part that sounds most like an actual person rather than a horoscope.

Questions people actually ask

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

Then the Ascendant and the house layout are unreliable — and we would rather say so than print a confident chart. The Sun, and every planet slower than the Moon, stay valid across the whole day. The Moon can change sign within a day, so treat it as approximate. If your family remembers a rough window, use the middle of it.

Which house system do you use?

Equal houses from the Ascendant by default. House systems disagree most for births at high latitudes, and equal-from-Ascendant is the most stable of the common choices there. This page shows signs rather than house placements, so the choice does not affect what you see here.

Why is my Rising different from another site?

Time zone and historical daylight saving, nine times out of ten. We resolve the place to coordinates and apply the offset that was actually in force on that date in that country, rather than the current one.

Is this the same chart the paid portrait uses?

Yes — same engine, same numbers. The paid part is the reading: how your aspects, your Human Design gates and your BaZi pillars behave together, written for your combination rather than for your Sun sign.

Is anything stored?

No account and no email. The finished result is cached for a month under a hash of the date, time and place so an identical request returns instantly, and it is not attached to a person. The city name alone goes to a geocoding service to become coordinates. Details are in the privacy policy.
